Notes from GHSSCA February 24, 2007 meeting

  • Attendance:  There were 40 present at the meeting.
  • Business meeting:  President Richard Taverano welcomed everyone and introduced the additional elected officers Jim Reason (Duluth) Vice President, Terry Blish (Marist) Secretary/Treasurer, and Pete Higgins (Westminster) Training Director.
  • Treasurer's Report:  Terry Blish gave the Treasurer's report.
  • Old business:   A discussion of the State Meet was held.  There seems to be much interest in moving the 5A State Meet to Georgia Tech.  All-State certificates were available for the coaches.
  • New business:  As a follow-up on the State Meet discussion, it was decided to propose to the GHSA that divers should be entered by their coaches on the web site similar to the swimmers.  The GHSA would then have one week to either accept or reject the diving entry.  There was agreement to ask that the qualifiers go to 10 places for both the championship and consolation finals where the facility will allow for 10 lanes.  There was discussion for moving the swimming season to the fall.  It was decided to survey the schools with swimming programs throughout the state for their input on this question.  No clear cut decision on this question was made at our meeting.  Discussion was had on having clinics/forums on subjects of interest from the membership.  Possible subjects mentioned were: Booster Clubs, a time line for the entire season, technology issues, diving, and equipment/personnel  needed for hosting a meet.  These clinics/forums will be tied in with our Fall 2007 meeting.
  • Election of President amd Secretary-Treasurer:   Richard Tavernaro (North Cobb) was reelected President and Terry Blish (Marist) was reelected to serve another term as our Secretary-Treasurer.

  • Coach-of-the-Year:  Colin Maloney (Northview) was elected for the 5A Girls, while Jack Gayle and Eric Brown (Parkview) were elected as co 5A Boys Coaches.  In the 1-4A Schools Terry Blish (Marist) was elected as Girl's Coach, and Pete Higgins (Westminster) was elected as the Boy's Coach.  Congratulations to these fine coaches.
